Vitalis Universal Grazing Station UK: Feeder for Tangs, Rabbitfish and Shy Fish
Drop a feed in all at once and your boldest fish have most of it in seconds.
Tangs, rabbitfish and angels graze all day in nature. Shy and slower fish miss out, and the rest ends up in the sand bed. Carry on and the same fish keep winning.
The Vitalis Universal Grazing Station holds food in one place. It fixes to the glass with a suction cup, and a small ball of pressed Reefphyto Soft Algae Pellets dropped down the feeding chute settles in a basket that fish, shrimp and inverts can pick at from every side. Pellets are sold separately.
Picture your tang picking at the glass through the afternoon while the shy fish take their turn.
I have cultured live marine food in Wales since 2008, and I am happy to advise on feeding herbivores.
Give every fish time to eat at its own pace.
Vitalis Universal Grazing Station UK: A Feeding Station for Grazing Fish
Watch a tang on a healthy reef and you see a fish that never stops picking. Watch the same fish in a tank and it is usually given one or two meals a day, which the boldest fish finish in seconds. The Vitalis Universal Grazing Station is a simple piece of kit that changes that pattern. It holds food in one place, on the glass, where your fish can graze at their own pace.
Why Grazing Fish Struggle With Broadcast Feeding
Tangs, rabbitfish and many angelfish are natural grazers. Their digestive systems and their behaviour are built around constant small meals, not two large ones. When food is scattered across the tank in one go, it is a race, and the quick, dominant fish win it. Slower and shyer fish are left with scraps, and whatever nobody reaches sinks into the sand bed where it breaks down and adds to your nutrient load.
The result is uneven condition across the tank. One fish looks rounded and confident while another looks a little thin, and it can be hard to spot until the difference is obvious. Feeding in a way that gives every fish a fair turn is one of the simplest improvements you can make to a mixed community.
How the Vitalis Grazing Station Works
The station attaches to the inside of your aquarium glass with a suction cup. It is made for Vitalis 8mm grazing pellets, and our Soft Algae Pellets work well too. Because they are soft, you can press a pinch of them into a small ball and drop it down the feeding chute. It settles in a basket at the bottom, where fish, shrimp and other invertebrates can pick at it from every side. Because the food stays in one place instead of scattering across the tank, shy and slower fish get a fair chance at it after the first rush has passed.
It works in both marine and freshwater tanks. The pellets are sold separately, so you can choose how much to offer and when to top up.
Setting Up Your Grazing Station
Choose a spot on clean glass where the station is easy for your fish to reach but away from the most turbulent flow, so the food is not battered around. Press the suction cup firmly against the glass and check it holds before you add food. Start with one small ball of pellets and watch who visits, how long it lasts and whether any fish are being kept away. If a dominant fish guards the basket, moving the station to a different spot or adding a second feeding point elsewhere in the tank often helps.
Check the suction cup from time to time, particularly if you clean the glass, and refit it as needed.
The Grazing Station and Live Food: Where It Fits
The station is designed for pellets, so it solves a different problem from our live foods. If you keep herbivores, it gives them a steady, contained way to graze, and you can fill it with Reefphyto Soft Algae Pellets pressed into a small ball. If you want to feed your fish something live, Pod-Shot is the quick, ready to use top-up, and live copepods build a refugium population that feeds the tank long term. Many keepers with tangs and rabbitfish also offer nori seaweed sheets as another way to keep grazers busy.
Vitalis Grazing Station FAQ
Does it work in a reef tank?
Yes. It works in marine and freshwater aquariums, and it fixes to the glass so it does not take up rockwork or sandbed space.
Which pellets does it take?
It is made for Vitalis 8mm grazing pellets. Our Soft Algae Pellets work too, pressed into a small ball. Both are sold separately.
Will shy fish actually use it?
That is the aim. The food stays in the basket instead of scattering, so it is still there after the boldest fish have had their turn, which gives slower fish time to get to it.
Who can feed from it?
Fish, shrimp and other invertebrates can pick at the basket from every side, so it suits a mixed community.
How many do I need?
One is enough for most tanks. If a dominant fish guards it, a second station in another part of the tank can help.
Build a Better Feeding Routine
A grazing station is one part of a varied routine. Pair it with live copepods for a long-term food source, Pod-Shot for a quick live feed, and 5 Species Phytoplankton for the filter feeders.
