Nyos LYQ-Red 500ml : Liquid Coral Food for SPS and LPS Reef Tanks
Your water tests are perfect, yet your corals look like they are only just getting by.
That is usually nutrition. Polyps stay half closed, colour stays flat and growth never quite takes off because the food on offer does not match what corals actually catch. Leave it and they coast rather than thrive.
Nyos LYQ-Red is a liquid coral food covering particles from 5 microns for SPS up to 2mm Calanus copepods for LPS, built on Schizochytrium, Haematococcus, mussel powder and marine oils. Dose 10ml per 1,000 litres a day, adjusting for coral load.
Picture polyps fully extended at dusk, deeper colour across the frags and steady growth week on week.
I have cultured live marine food in Wales since 2008, and I am glad to help you set a dose.
Give your corals a proper meal, every day.
Nyos LYQ-Red UK: Feed Corals That Test Perfectly but Never Quite Shine
A tank can test perfectly and still not look its best. Alkalinity is stable, calcium and magnesium are in range, nitrate and phosphate sit where the forum said they should, and the corals are alive but not exciting. Polyps stay half out, colours look a bit flat, and growth never quite takes off. In my experience the missing piece is often food: the right food, in the right sizes, given steadily. Nyos LYQ-Red 500ml is a liquid coral food designed to cover the whole range of particle sizes corals catch in the wild.
Why Corals Need More Than Clean Water
Corals get part of their energy from the algae living in their tissue, but many also capture particles from the water column, from tiny bacteria and algae through to phytoplankton, zooplankton and larger planktonic prey. Different corals target different sizes. SPS corals with small polyps tend to feed on fine particles, while LPS species such as Euphyllia, Lobophyllia and Trachyphyllia capture larger, meatier pieces.
A tank that is scrupulously clean and skimmed hard can end up with very little of any of this in the water. The corals survive on light and whatever they can scavenge, and they show it in polyp extension, colour and growth rate.
What Is in Nyos LYQ-Red Liquid Coral Food
LYQ-Red combines the microalgae Schizochytrium and Haematococcus, natural mussel powder, Arctic Calanus and marine oils. The particle range runs from around 5 microns, suitable for SPS and other small polyp corals, up to 2mm Calanus copepods that LPS corals can capture. One product covering both ends of that range is the practical advantage, because you do not need a separate bottle for each coral type. Haematococcus is a microalga known as a natural source of astaxanthin, a pigment reef keepers often associate with colour.
How to Dose Nyos LYQ-Red
The recommended dose is 10ml per 1,000 litres per day, which works out at 1ml per 100 litres. Treat that as a starting point and adjust for how much coral you have. A heavily stocked SPS system may take more, and a fish heavy tank with a few corals may need less. Introduce it gradually over a week or two and keep an eye on nitrate and phosphate as your routine settles, because any new food adds nutrients. If anything has settled in the bottle, give it a gentle shake before dosing.
LYQ-Red does not need to be kept in the fridge, which makes it suitable for a dosing pump. That lets you feed small amounts through the day instead of one large dose, which is closer to how corals meet food on a natural reef.
LYQ-Red Compared With Live Phytoplankton and Live Copepods
LYQ-Red is a prepared food, and it helps to understand how it differs from live cultures. It is ready to use, stable on the shelf, and provides a wider range of particle sizes, including meaty particles that phytoplankton does not. Live phytoplankton offers fresh, living cells that feed copepods, filter feeders and the smallest coral feeders. They do different jobs, and many keepers use both: LYQ-Red for the larger particles and 5 Species Phytoplankton for the smallest.
It will not replace live copepods, which establish in a refugium and keep feeding the tank for months. Think of LYQ-Red as the daily, dependable meal and live cultures as the living ecosystem around it.
Nyos LYQ-Red FAQ
How much Nyos LYQ-Red should I dose?
The starting dose is 10ml per 1,000 litres per day. Adjust it up or down depending on how heavily stocked with coral your tank is, and build up to it gradually.
Does it need to be refrigerated?
No. LYQ-Red does not need to be kept in the fridge, so it can sit next to a dosing pump.
Can I use it in a dosing pump?
Yes. Small, frequent doses through the day suit coral feeding well. Run a short test first so you know the dose your pump delivers.
Which corals is it for?
It is designed for SPS and LPS corals and other corals that feed on particles in this size range, from 5 microns to 2mm.
Will it raise nitrate and phosphate?
Any food adds nutrients to a tank. Start with a low dose, build up slowly and test regularly so you can find the level your system handles comfortably.
Build a Complete Coral Feeding Routine
LYQ-Red works best alongside live food. Add 5 Species Phytoplankton for the smallest feeders, try Reef Juice if you want a live blend for coral and filter feeder nutrition, and build a long-term population with live copepods.
