Isochrysis phytoplankton is used for DHA enrichment for rotifers & copepods. It is the most commonly used algae for oysters, clams, mussels, and scallops. Isochrysis is species of single-celled algae that help form the entire base of the natural food chain.
Isochrysis is a small golden/brown flagellate that is very commonly used in the aquaculture industry. It is high in DHA and often used to enrich zooplankton such as rotifers or Artemia. Isochrysis phytoplankton is a primary algae used in shellfish hatcheries and used in some shrimp hatcheries.
The Microscopic Plants (Phytoplankton) feed the microscopic animals (Zooplankton), produced in live rock which then feeds everything in the aquarium. Many often forget the need for phytoplankton, relying purely on a zooplankton diet.
Without a premium phytoplankton diet, the base of the food chain suffers, thus affecting everything in the system. Additionally, many clams, gorgonians & other coral filter out only Phytoplankton, thus zooplankton diets are useless for these particular animals.
Besides being a food source that generates the natural food for all tropic levels, Phytoplankton absorbs undesirable chemicals present in many reef aquariums, such as ammonia, nitrite, nitrates, phosphates, silicates, etc.
Our Isoschrysis Phytoplankton cannot be cultured as it is not a live product.
• Brighter coloured corals
• Faster coral growth
• Greater polyp extension
• Increased number of micro fauna
• Increased zooplankton and copepod populations
• Mysid populations will bloom due to the increase in copepods.
This product cannot be cultured. If you wish to culture our phytoplankton then please see our culture starter.
